Oregon Living 2023 – Blog #19 – SF Bound and Home Again! (No. 2)

Since I’m getting pretty detailed with our trip, I’m going to split the usual weekly post into two parts. So, be sure to read them in order!

Wednesday, May 3rd., 2023……  Today was the tour day! We had breakfast in the hotel and then made our way down to Pier 33. The first stop was Alcatraz. This we did on our own. I have been 3-4 times but Cat has never been.

The boat was pretty packed. There were a few school outings with us on this one. We got the park guide’s welcome when we got to the docks and then started up the hill. Yes, we walked up!  I think next time we will take the tram! We got our audio headsets and did the tour. I have never been out to the exercise yard before (don’t know why?) but we did take that side tour. After watching Escape From Alcatraz and Shawshank Redemption, you can almost get a feel for what life was like in the cells and out in the yard. We saw the cells that the three guys were in when they made their famous escape in 1962...

And the visitation glass wall.…

Here are the rest of the pics we took from ‘The Rock….

After that, we got back on the ferry and had plenty of time to rest before our van showed up. The folks on that van had done the other part of the tour and were dropped off for Alcatraz. And we got on. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and the Mercedes Sprinter van was very comfortable. She took us to the Palace of Art, and the Presidio, and then across the Golden Gate bridge and then on up to Muir Woods. We were able to use my senior parks pass so we saved $30. total. We were there for 1.5 hours and had a nice lunch and a great walk among the redwoods. We heard from a park ranger who shared some interesting facts about the region and the forest.

Once back on the bus, we headed back toward the city, stopping for an hour or so in Sausalito. I had never been and it would have been a fun stop had it not started raining. We ducked in and out of a few shops before we headed back to the van to get out of the rain. But it was still nice. She dropped us off at Pier 39 and we made the short walk to Boudin Bakery for dinner. It’s my favorite place for sourdough bread but I had never had dinner there. It was really nice. I had the clam chowder soup in a bread bowl. Cat had angel hair pasta with shrimp. Plus we had our last drinks together while there.

We walked back to our hotel and hit the spa before crashing from our busy day! Tomorrow we head home.

Thursday, May 4th., 2023…… After a nice night’s sleep, we were up and going early. We got packed and left about 6:30am. We decided to drive out of the city and then look for a place for breakfast. There was very little traffic leaving the city. But it was packed and stacked bumper to bumper for those coming in to work. Glad we’re not in that rat race anymore! We stopped in Fairfield for another McDonalds meal. The drive home was 563 miles and took us about 9 ½ hours. That was because we wanted to stop at Heaven on Earth for linner. This is a little place on I5, about 35 miles north of Grants Pass.  I had never been but had heard they had ‘to die for cinnamon rolls’ so it was a perfect time to stop! I was not disappointed! We split a burger and fries and a bowl of chicken pot pie soup and a cinnamon roll.

We will be going back on our trips that way!

The drive today was not too bad and since we were in the Acadia, it was pretty comfortable. We got home at 4:00pm and the dogs went nuts! We fed them and then unpacked. We just went ahead and put our dirty clothes right into the washer! We settled in and watched tv and caught up on The Masked Singer and Survivor and then hit the spa before calling it a night. It was sure a fun trip!

Friday, May 5th., 2023…… Not much on the agenda today. We’re just kicking back and relaxing from our trip. Today was Friday, so it was our cleaning day. We both set out on that task and we were done pretty quickly. Back to kick back mode!  Neither one of us even drove anywhere today – until Cathye headed over to visit Jackie at her mobile home park.  Throughout the day, I got caught up on some of my taped races. Later, we watched some of our other taped shows on the living room tv.  Spa and then bed.

Saturday, May 6th., 2023…… When we came home the other day, we were seriously hoping the rains had stopped up here and the grass would be drying out so we could mow.  Nope!  It was wet when we got back and it's wet now!  It may be nice and green but the grass is as tall as it’s ever been!  It will be tough to mow.

Plus, the weather doesn’t look like it will cooperate for the next few days either! Dang!  But there is forecast for drier days next week.  Cathye leaves on Tuesday for Missouri to go visit her son Michael and daughter-in-law Crystal. She’ll be there for 6 days. So, she is getting things ready. She has a few things for them that she needed to locate in the house so they get packed tomorrow.  All that said, it looks like I will be a one-man crew for mowing – if the weather stays dry long enough.  Penny will probably come over to help if/when I can mow. Cathye headed out this afternoon to pick up her prescription from Walgreens. Poor girl – the pharmacy and her doctor just can’t seem to get on the same page so she is chasing her meds down. I think they decided to just send it to the local pharmacy down the street from her doctor in Brownsville so she will need to go there for it. Hopefully later in the day…

Ok, it’s later and she left for that task and got back 30 minutes later. She is good to go now for meds for her trip! She stopped on the way back and picked up Jack in the Box for an easy dinner. Tv and spa until bedtime. The spa was so nice even though the wind was really chilly going to and from. Still worth it!
