Oregon Living 2023 – Blog #37 – Getting Tree Bids, Going to the State Fair & Going to the Circus!

Sunday, August 27th., 2023…… Today, Chris and Angie were heading home. Their flight wasn’t until 11:30am but they wanted to get to the airport by 10:00am. That meant that we needed to leave the house around 7:45am so we could take them to breakfast at one of our favorite spots! We love the chicken fried steak at Prairie Schooner in Eugene and they are open on Sunday mornings, so it was a no brainer! We had a nice leisurely meal and worked our way over to the airport to say our goodbyes and drop them off. We sure enjoy it when they come to visit and look forward to doing it again soon!  We got back home and pretty much vegged for the day. We did do several loads of laundry throughout the day. Plus, I caught up on my little league baseball games and Cat watched some of her taped shows. Just lazing around!

Monday, August 28th., 2023…… I was up and out early for my 7:30am dental appointment. No issues and cleaning as usual but today they added x-rays to the bill. Bummer!  I have insurance (which doesn’t really pay a lot for dental) and I chose this dentist thinking they were in my plan (not) but I like them so but it doesn’t pay enough for me to move over to someone else and leave these guys. Cathye is thinking about moving from her dentist in Albany and going local. She will look to see if my office is on her plan. While I was out early, that left Grammy to walk and feed the girls. I got back about an hour later and picked her up and we headed over to the gym for our workouts. We were supposed to go to Penny’s house because we were going to be watering while she is traveling down in SoCal. But Cherrelyn has volunteered to just stay there at watch the house.  After the gym, we went to Kevin’s for breakfast and while we were there, I went online and found three tree trimmers and requested estimates from them all to remove that big old tree out by our well. It’s so close and its roots are causing pressure on the pump and pipes. So, it’s got to go! The first one set up a meet up for Wednesday. The second for tomorrow. The third one will be here this afternoon. So, I had some time to work on my blog from last week. It took me all of the morning and the better part of the afternoon but I managed to get it written, the pics added, and get it posted. That one was long!  The guy came and we went out in the truckster and he looked everything over. I have got it in my head to made sure to ask each of them for a part b as well, which is to clean up the widow makers straight out from the house. The grandkids play out there and we want them to be safe. He gave me a verbal quote and I told him I had others coming. He asked if he lowered the price would I hire him today?  He said he wants jobs to keep his crew working. Yeah, right!  I told him I would wait on the others before deciding. He asked to let him know because he might be able to lower his quote a bit. I thanked him and he went on his way. I admire his business savvy because I would do the same thing! Later, she decided we needed to go out to eat. I got to choose. I chose Barsidious but turned out they are closed on Mondays. So, we went to the Conversion Brewery and had a nice dinner and drinks.

Bedtime after tv and spa.

Tuesday, August 29th., 2023…… HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAIT!  We called Tait, who is back visiting in New Hampshire, and wished her a happy birthday. A few things on the agenda for today. The only thing I have to do today is one more estimate. The second guy would be here at 10:00am so we decided to go work outside. I moved some of the chairs back from the party last week and Cat worked on the spa filter. She took out the old one to wash it and put in a new one. When you do that when it’s full of water, you get some residuals that needed to be cleaned up. I helped her with that. The tree guy got here and we went over the same procedure. He will get me an email quote. I came in to rest and watch tv for a bit. Cathye left to go pick up Judy. They were going to lunch and then will hit Hobby Lobby and then the garden section at Lowes’ or Home Depot. I worked a bit on my layout for the bar. When we were out in Conversion last night, we noted the bar height, vs counter height, vs table height in the brewery because they have all three!  We found a few chairs on Amazon that actually showed height charts in inches of all three. That really helps in deciding how high to install the bartop so it fits the chairs. Cathye even measured the ones in the bar where she and Judy were having lunch!  After that, I came back in and opened the Amazon package we got in today. One of the outdoor lights on the garage needs to be replaced. These have the little square led light modules and are supposed to last years. I guess it’s been at least 3 years but one is out. I looked online and we chose to just replace both the units with ones we like better.  They came today. When Cat got back, we talked about dinner. She had already pulled out leftovers and we ate that. She also mentioned that they were having another night at the park and tonight was a country band. So, we packed up our chairs and jackets and took off. Problem was when we got there, no one was around!  We called Judy and she checked and finally found that they had cancelled it because there was a threat of rain. The rain never happened and neither did the concert! We went back home and Cathye pulled out some frozen chicken wings and put them in the air fryer and we had that and watched tv and did our spa time and went to bed.

Wednesday, August 30th., 2023…… The last guy came early this morning to give us an estimate. After just a few minutes with him (plus, giving us a lower bid!) I knew he was the one we would hire. They will be here next Friday and will get the job done. He is squeezing us in (he’s booked out through October) because rain is coming and he doesn’t want to wait and have the field get so soggy that his truck(s) can’t out there! That done, I spent a few minutes and got the new carriage lights installed on the outside of the garage. They are not as big as the other ones so I am not happy but Cathye likes them and they do put out a good light which is what we want. I think I will check Costco next time we go just to see if they might have the ones I bought for the front porch in stock again. Rain is in the forecast. We can’t remember when we got any measurable rain. It would be welcome. But not so much for us for tomorrow. Read on….

Thursday, August 31st., 2023…… Today was Fair Day! We had told Corey and Vikki that we would meet them and the grandkids at the state fair in Salem this morning. Of course, it was raining!  We haven’t seen rain for over three months but here we are!  But, we left anyway and drove up to Salem and went to The Acme Café for breakfast before meeting them at the fair. It was only $5.00 for parking and $3.00 ea. for seniors, so that was good. Cathye found the kids and gave Brandon and Bailey some money for rides (which we didn’t want to go on – especially in the wet!) and we walked through the exhibitors buildings and entertained ourselves with art, quilts,

baked goods, toy displays,

and of course, the vendor booths. We stopped at one of the massage chair setups and we each got a 10-minute total body massage,. I have to admit that it was very relaxing. I could get hooked on this! Normally, these things don’t fit my torso but this one (Cathye and I were next to each other)

is the latest and greatest and automatically reads the body and adjusts for you. Like I said, it was awesome! The model we liked was only $13,900.00 but we could get the ‘fair discount’ at $9,700.00.. But wait – there’s more!  If we wanted a ‘floor model’, it would only be $7.800. Sure, we’ll take two! Yeah, right! We went over to the livestock and horse barns and saw peacocks, rabbits, and horses. They were competing in harness and wagon duo teams. They were excellently cared for and well trained. These guys we saw today were the under 18 age group.

After that, we joined up with the family for lunch. They were smart and brought boxed lunches for them and the kids, and her dad (who we met for the first time). We split up. Cathye got corn on the cob and I chose a chili dog and a Dr. Pepper. We walked around a bit more and got an ice cream and then went to find the kids to say goodbye. I must say that they really do a great job at this fair. There were more rides and games than I thought could fit in the place! We didn’t see them and left the kids to enjoy their day

and drove back home. Cherrelyn was staying at my sister’s house while she is in Calif., so we asked her to come over and let the dogs out. The rain stopped (of course) while we were driving home. At least it will give the grass and flowers a good soaking. It would come again later when we were in bed too!

Friday, September 1st., 2023…… We had the girls out and walked and fed, then took coffee to go and headed over to Albany to go to breakfast and then hit Costco. We chose Elmer’s and split the German Pancake breakfast. Yummy as always. We realized pretty quickly when we got to the parking lot, that it was the first of the month!  Yes, Costco was hopping! Still not anywhere near the crowds in the Costcos in SoCal, but more than we were used to here. We had a list but that didn’t work out too well and we found $300.00 worth of stuff we ‘needed’. Once we got home, we got the car unloaded and I turned around and headed back because I drove out without going to Lowes while we were there!  Duuh! I found what I needed to use for the brackets for the bar top. Next up for that project is the bar stools themselves. We need outdoor quality and they are readily available on Amazon. We now know what size to get. Once received, I can adjust the bar height to whatever works with the stools. We hung around the house and relaxed. Cathye made a mac and cheese casserole and, a bit later, we set out to go to Corvallis for a night out. I had bought tickets to see the Cirque Italia Water Circus - Silver Unit. With some research, I found that this is a traveling show (under a big tent)

that uses water features (not swimming or pools as you might think). The reviews were pretty good so I got us front row seats a few weeks ago. The show didn’t start until 7:30pm, so we had plenty of time to drive there, get parked, and get to our seats.  As I said, we were in the very first row, so the view was terrific! They run this perimeter of water on the stage floor and it encases the stage and the acts. Pretty cool, but, being in the front row, we did get a little wet. Here are pics from the night….

We got back and drove through Corvallis, which was pretty quiet for a Friday night. Since this is a college town, there are many fraternities and sororities all around the area. We expected to see college kids hanging out on a Friday night, but it quiet.  We got back home and let the girls out and then went straight to bed. Fun day!

Saturday, September 2nd., 2023…… Neither one of us had anything on our agenda today. We cleaned house and then rested and then Cat went out to Walmart and then to drop off Jamie’s facility payment. I worked a bit on the blog and watched one of my Nascar races. Quiet day.
