Oregon Living 2025 – Blog #15 – A Poor Deer, Babies, and Our Anniversary!

Sunday, April 20th., 2025…… HAPPY EASTER ! Well it was for us for a while!  Here’s the story…..

We woke up and saw that we needed to get moving this morning. We were going to Sweet Home to church and they were serving breakfast beforehand. We wanted to go help, and walked and fed the dogs and left. We were heading out Hwy 20, which is a two lane each way road, with a wide median in the middle. We were talking and then, WHAM – a deer ran across the entire road at high speed. I only just saw it briefly in the windshield before I hit it. I immediately pulled over. We got out and saw the deer was lying in the median. Cathye picked up our car’s body parts and I drug the deer off the highway. The car was damaged beyond driving. I immediately called our insurance company and they got started with the tow request. While we were on the phone, we had several ‘good samaritans’ stop to check on us. We were fine, but the car wasn’t going anywhere. One of the folks said, “You can keep the deer”.  I said I wasn’t interested but they could have it. Cathye talked with them and when I got the call finished, she said they were going to come back with their truck and pick it up. Didn’t see them again, because we only had to wait only about 15-20 minutes. Before the tow truck arrived. The guy had to tow it to our home because it was Easter Sunday and nothing was open. The car took a hit but only on the left front area. I think we were lucky that the deer was young. Also that it didn’t roll up over the hood and into the windshield.  He dropped it off and we came in and recovered. We would end up staying in the rest of the day.

Monday, April 21st., 2025…… This morning we had Pointe Pest Control come for their scheduled 3-month treatment. Besides all the work outside, we had them come in and spray the kitchen and bathroom floors for ants, which have been invading us lately. He finished and left. Later, the adjuster called and we made arrangements for the body shop here in town to do the work. They haven’t called back yet so we don’t have a timeframe. Later, we went to Dos Arbolitos for dinner, then settled in for the evening. Tv, spa and bed.

Tuesday, April 22nd., 2025…… We were up and ready if and when the guy called to come take the car to the body shop. It wasn’t until later in the day when he called and came and got it. It went about 1 ½ miles to Caliber Collision here in town.

I am still waiting for them to call. We went about our day and headed over to catch the last half of the workshop. Did I mention that Cathye is not happy going there sometimes!  When we got home, we worked around the yard for a few minutes. Cathye got some more plants transplanted with new potting soil amended in. I got a text from Caliber saying they received our car. That was it!

Wednesday, April 23rd., 2025…… NEW BABIES TODAY! We are on baby watch today. The doctors said that because Vikki’s placenta wasn’t producing enough nutrition, they would be taking the babies by c section. She is ready! They are scheduled for later in the evening, so we wait….

Jose, the third painting contractor, was supposed to come by today to present his bid. I talked to him later in the day and he said he didn’t have it in his calendar! Not a good sign! But when we discussed paint supplier options, I found he was doing some extra research to make sure he was getting what I asked for and the best of the best. So, no worries. We did manage to pick out a paint color. We found a shed in a lot here in town with exactly the right colors for the body and the trim. I took our Sherwin Williams color wheel over there and found a really good match.

example only - none of these!

Randy texted me with news. His friend Steve, had submitted pics to Mountain Bike Action magazine from their mountain bike trip, and one got published!.....

Way cool!  I have already ordered a copy.

Later, we settled in and watched tv and waited for a call or text. Corey said they were scheduled to go in around 8:00pm. We were hoping that they would hold off so the babies would be born on our anniversary! He texted that they were held up due to an emergency so it looked good for a while. Later, he sent us the first pics. They were born at 10:27 and 10:29pm. Both heathy and mom was doing well. We went to bed knowing we have two more additions to the family!

Thursday, April 24th., 2025…… HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US!  The plan today was to go up to Salem to see the kids and the new littles. After walking and feeding the girls, we hit the gym and then went to Kristi’s for breakfast.  Kristi’s was closed so we went on up to Salem and went to Sybil’s for omelettes.  After that, we made our way to the hospital and up to the birthing center. The room was already full with Vikki’s side of the family. Everyone was excited!  We saw the newbies and got to hold them and everything! It was so much fun! They are both healthy, just a little undersized. The baby girl is 4.6 lbs. and the boy is 5.13 lbs. No special treatments for either – just normal fun little babies!  They have their beds right in with momma and family! They are still working over names right now. We know each will have a middle name, maybe more than one!

We left them to rest and headed back home. We rested for a bit before it was time to change and head out for our anniversary dinner. I had chosen Mazzi’s in south Eugene. I had been there before and enjoyed the food and the cuisine. We got there in time for our reservation and got a seat by the fireplace. It was very nice.  The meal was good for me. I chose manicotti. Cathye got their seafood fettucine but didn’t like the sauce on it so much. But we both enjoyed the evening and the time together.

Friday, April 25th., 2025…… The only thing on our agenda today was Rylee’s vet appointment for her annual checkup and shots. I went off and got that done. We wanted to mow today but it was windy and overcast and had rained a little last night, so the grass wasn’t ready. We ended up spending most of the day inside, just lounging and watching tv. I did drive over to Caliber to retrieve Cat’s handicap placard from the car. The lady in the office gave me the keys and said it was in the back lot. I found it was the farthest car parked back there! They had the hood up and I guess had inspected everything. I asked her on the way out if she had a timeline for me, and she said nope!  Later in the evening, Mike and Cheryl came over and we talked, had dessert and played cards. Mike told me about his (or a friend’s) experience with Caliber. They were so backlogged that they said it would be 3 ½ months before they would get their job done!  I am stuck now if that happens! But I will have to wait and see.

Saturday, April 26th., 2025……  Tonight we had a fundraiser to attend in Portland. Cathye has been a supported of the Project Living Hope for Haiti to help get the country some aid. Her friends, Anita and Nick, have a daughter who is married to a doctor and has lived there off and on. They are here now and they are a part of this annual Project Living Hope fund raiser. We had gone before so I knew what to expect.  We headed up early so we could visit with Josh and drop off the sweatshirt he left here last time. On the way up, we got a post from the kids. They have named the babies!  Little baby boy is now Creedence Charles Roger Elliott! Our little girl is Caroline Enid Denise Elliott!

tongues out  ?

After a visit with Josh, we dropped him off at friends

near where we went for our event (Moda Center convention hotel).  Anita sponsored a table of 10. It was a great turnout with 13-14 full tables. In addition to a great dinner, they have items for silent auction, plus a live auction with 6 high ticket items. They also did a few new games. One was called ‘Heads or Tails’ where you purchased necklaces. The more you had, the better your odds. The auctioneer had everyone with necklaces stand up. Then participants select either heads or tails by putting their hands on their head or their bottoms! He flipped a coin (actually he used an app on his smart watch!) which showed heads or tails. If you lost, you removed one of your necklaces. The last one standing got a $250. Amazon gift card.

The other game was a deck of cards raffle. You purchased one or more playing cards, which were torn in half. You kept one half and the other went in for the drawing. Winner got a Blackstone grill. Of course we didn’t win either one, but it was fun and I learned something we could use as games at one of our special Club dances in the future! They also had a ‘spin to win’ game which Cat participated in. This one was an actual commitment to bid dollars for several projects. She contributed to Feed the Children, Sponsor an Athlete, and Buy a Solar Panel for the education center. Our bidder’s number was added to a virtual computer screen wheel and was spun.

Prizes were homemade Haitian items. We didn’t take any prizes or auction items home, but we helped out a great cause. Like I said, it was a fun evening.  Penny and Jody had come over and fed the dogs, but Jama didn’t really eat so she had a ‘late dinner’ before we finally called it a night and went to bed.
